Standing Egg Chairs

Standing egg chairs sit on a fixed base rather than swinging from a frame. They are more stable, take up less room, and suit smaller patios where a wide A-frame stand would eat into your space.

We carry single-seat models in oval and round shapes, plus a two-seater that comfortably fits two adults. The oval is slightly more open and airy. The round wraps closer around you. Both are personal preference, and both come with thick padded cushions and weatherproof PE rattan on a steel frame. The footstool model is worth a look too, if you want somewhere to put your feet up properly.

These work well on patios and decking, but also in conservatories or indoors if you have the ceiling height. All held in stock at our UK warehouse.

What to Look For in a Standing Egg Chair

Standing egg chairs have all the comfort of a traditional egg chair but sit on a fixed base instead of hanging from a frame. There is no swinging motion, which some people actually prefer. They feel more stable, they are easier to get in and out of, and they work on surfaces where a hanging frame might wobble, like decking or gravel.

The shape varies more than you might think. Some standing models are oval, others are round, and there are two-seat versions as well. Oval shapes tend to offer better back support and a slightly more reclined seating position. Round models sit more upright and take up less floor space.

Because there is no overhead frame, standing egg chairs have a smaller footprint than hanging ones. A single standing model typically needs a floor area of about 90cm x 80cm. That makes them a strong option for smaller gardens and patios.

Materials are the same as our hanging egg chairs: PE rattan hand-woven over powder-coated steel. The base is usually a sturdy cross or pedestal design that keeps the chair steady even on slightly uneven ground. Weight capacity ranges from 120kg for single models up to 200kg for two-seaters.

Assembly is generally quicker than hanging models since there is no frame to build. Most people finish in 15-20 minutes. For a comparison of the two styles, our standing vs hanging egg chairs blog post covers everything you need to know.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do standing egg chairs rock or swivel?

No. Standing egg chairs sit on a fixed base and do not move. This is one of their main advantages for people who find swinging uncomfortable or who have mobility issues. The chair stays firmly in place once you sit down.

Are standing egg chairs more stable than hanging ones?

Generally, yes. The low centre of gravity and wide base make them very stable, even on slightly uneven surfaces. They are also a better choice if you have young children, as there is no swinging motion to worry about.

Can I use a standing egg chair on grass?

You can, though the base may sink slightly into soft ground over time. On a lawn, consider placing a paving slab or flat board underneath to distribute the weight. They work best on hard surfaces like patios, decking, or concrete.

What is the difference between oval and round standing egg chairs?

Oval standing egg chairs are taller and narrower, with a more reclined seating angle. Round models are wider and sit more upright, which some people find better for reading. The choice is mostly about personal comfort preference and the look you want.

How do I clean a standing egg chair?

Wipe the PE rattan down with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. A garden hose on a gentle setting works well for rinsing. Avoid pressure washers as they can damage the weave. Clean the cushion covers separately by removing them and machine washing on a cool cycle. Our rattan care guide has more detailed instructions.
